What Is A Subkick?

What Is A Subkick?

SUBKICK

Some of you might have seen a round device (looks like a small drum) in front of the bass drum in studios or stages. It's called Subkick. The most famous one was developed by Yamaha—although it has been discontinued from production—but there are plenty going around.

A Subkick is a low-frequency capturing device that picks up the low frequencies (50Hz-2000Hz) that a normal microphone can't.

When used in conjunction with a normal internal microphone (for the attack), your bass drum has a lot of bottom. Like many other microphones, it is essentially a speaker working backwards.

If you have the chance to try one, do it. Some love it, some don’t think it is worth it. You be the judge of that.
